Pete:

Hello and welcome to this Get Flushed short. I'm Pete. Today's question is, what's the best way to run a pre start meeting?

Pre start meetings are the first thing you do in the morning when everybody arrives at work and you typically give out your deployments and any other instructions for the day. As a 19 year old college student, I was lucky enough to attend a week long outdoor leadership course in the UK.

The course was led by a retired Royal Navy commander and it changed my life. What I learned in those seven days set me up. That sounds trite, but it's true. I'll explain why.

One of the main aspects of the course involved learning how to plan, prepare and deliver team briefings. I'd never done anything like that before, but we were taught a simple and effective tool that I still use today.

Back then, the model was called IIMAC, which stood for information, intention, method, admin and communication. Later on, it was expanded to include risk management and it became IIMARC. That's the model I prefer today. I stands for information.

Who, what, when and where. Intention. Why are we here in this briefing and what are we trying to achieve as a result of the information I'm going to share with you today? Method.

The operational detail, how we're all going to do it, administration, all the details that we need to know to make things happen smoothly and keep a proper record of what we've done risks, everything we need to do to make sure the job is safe for everyone involved. And communication, how we intend to talk to each other and keep everyone in the loop.

The model is really well suited to daily pre starts and to any briefings where you need a team of people to follow a plan. It's simple, but it can be adapted to include everything you need to cover, which makes it really powerful and versatile.

I'm going to roleplay a team briefing using the IIMARC model information. Good morning, everybody. It's Tuesday the 12 December. I'm going to talk through today's tasks and deployments. Intention.

It's my intention today to let you all know what we're going to do. Beyond that, we've got 142 services, three deliveries and three pickups to complete before close of business.

Today, we're sending out five sanitation trucks. John, you're on truck one on the west route. You've got 27 services, one pickup and one delivery. Sheba, you're on truck two.

On the east route, 30 services and no extras. Wayne, on truck three. On the south run, 28 services plus two deliveries. Please.

Martha on the central business district in truck 426 cleans plus two pickups and Stevie Westroute truck 531 cleans no extras admin I've sent all the jobs to your tablets. Can you please get signatures on site for deliveries? Don't forget to complete your vehicle checks and hand your timesheet in at the end of the day.

Risks please remember to wear your high vis, your glasses and gloves while you're pumping.

Turn on the warning beacon and hazard lights on your truck when you arrive on site, and please make sure your cabins are properly tied onto the truck if you're making pickups or deliveries. Communication as I said, don't forget your tablets.

Take your charging cables so you can keep in touch and upload your jobs, and call me if you need anything. Obviously, I've really rattled through that, but I hope it gives you an idea of how the IIMARC model works.

If you run a daily pre start meeting, try using that model and let me know how you got on. That's all for today. I've been Pete and this has been a Get Flushed short.
